August 23rd, 2011 Anyone else need a break from Wedding stuff??? Well it’s been a while since we’ve tried to act smart here on HFoP, so let’s bring it back to a little Teach me Tuesday, shall we? This week we’re learning about Greek Key! Source Greek Key (also known as the Meander Pattern): A decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. Such a design is also called the Greek fret or Greek key design, although these are modern designations. It’s like a little maze in your home decor. Keep reading…
June 7th, 2011 Morning friends! Just taking a quick detour from our Outside Pride journey to squeeze in a little “teach me tuesday” this week. Having come into force in 2004, it prescribes responsibilities to governments, shipping companies, shipboard personnel, and port/facility personnel to “detect security threats and take preventative

It’s a bit on the modern side for me, but what do you think? Can color blocking survive in your home? May 10th, 2011 Tchotchke (pronounced CHACH-kee) are small toys, gewgaws, knickknacks, baubles, trinkets, or kitsch. The term has a connotation of worthlessness or disposability, as well as tackiness. Ok, I must admit… I have referred to these in this blog before as knickknacks because I had ABSOLUTELY no idea how to spell the word, but having grown up referring to (and collecting) these babies… it was time I learned! And I have to disagree with the Wikipedia definition above, because Tchotchkes are not necessarily worthless. If done right, they can ROCK! I love a good (and unique) collection of items, to fill up a bookshelf, mantle or

April 26th, 2011 After last week’s debut of Teach me Tuesday, Chevron… Here’s another “legit” term for a pattern I love. HFoP is totally schooling ya’ll right now! Quatrefoil is an old term used to describe a four-lobed ornament (kinda like a four leaf clover), that was historically used in the Gothic period for windows, architectural detailing and furniture. Today however, it’s become popular in rugs, wallpaper, even as an art form (um… check out my banner). La Dolce Vita Shades of Light DIY alert! The CSI

But low and behold the pattern has a REAL design name! This is serious learning people! So I’ve decided to start a new series called “teach me tuesdays” where I share with you something “legit” I’ve learned from the design world. Whether it be a design term, trend, style – we can learn together! And if nothing else, it reeeeally helps your shopping habit when you have the actual name of the design you’re looking for.
