DIY Succulent Medley

Saw these beauties at the garden store the other day… Price tag was $79 each.  I love you but um, no thanks. So instead I bought these mini succulents (bottom right) for $4/each… And using some potting soil and a pot I already had siting around… Put together my own version! Best part?  You really can’t kill these.  Trust me.  If any one could, it would be me… Nope.  Alive and thriving, and under $30 buckeroos! I heart succulents.

Planning for Spring

Fiiiinally it feels like warmer weather is just around the corner, here in New England.  This is always such an exciting time of year, when you can almost taste the sunshine, flip flops, and backyard BBQ parties.  I can’t wait! Our new patio and backyard landscaping are well on their way (posts to come soon) and so right now I have outdoor decor on the brain.  I’ve been perusing Pinterest for inspiration, and so here are some of my favorite finds! All sources can be found on my Pinterest board here. I love entertaining, and think is such a clever

Holy Snow!

There are many great things about being a home owner, as I often share here on this blog… But there are also times when I really miss being a renter, where many of the “no fun” tasks are miraculously taken care of for you! Case in point:  The Blizzard of 2013 Like most of you New Englanders, we got slammed this weekend with a Nor’easter that dumped up to 30″ of snow!!!  We were actually away in Maine for most of the storm and so coming home Sunday afternoon was quite a slap in the face.   There was no place to even

Sneak Peak: Backyard Makeover

Winter has definitely meant a lull in our house renovation calendar… a welcome one at that.   It’s given us time to relax, recoup, plan, and most importantly, save money for the next projects!!!    And the next big project on our agenda is actually about half way done (oh I’m so sneaky) and so I thought I’d catch you up a bit before things move too far. Welcome to our backyard! For the town we live in, we were incredibly lucky to get a large plot of land – much of which is taken up by our backyard.  In

Let’s Grill Ya’ll

Alrighty let’s continue with the backyard theme by talking about our most practical piece of outdoor decor, and that is our grill. When we convered to natural gas heat (see this post for more info) Tony, being the grill master that he is, requested an extra gas line out back so that we could hook up a grill directly to the fuel source.  See ya later propane tanks! In typical Hopf style, we went right to Craigslist to find a natural gas grill and scored a Weber grill for so cheap, I’m not even gonna tell

Project: Backyard Stairs

There are lot’s of great things about being a home owner (and lot’s of not so great things too) but I think one of my top 5 favorite things about owning a house is having my own backyard.  Being a dog owner, there is something really special about being able to let your dog out in the middle of the night to poop (yes, I used special and poop in the same sentence) and not have to worry about landlords or neighbors complaining. In addition to our backyard being a great late night bathroom spot, it’s also become a bit

Love for the Adirondack

Guess what?  Adirondack chairs are maaad expensive. Guess what else?  I found a cheaper alternative.  Shocker. It requires some paint and some patience, but man it’s worth it. Let’s take this step by step. 1. Pick up an unfinished chair (or 4) from Home Depot.  They are currently on sale for $29 which is incredible since most chairs will cost you upwards of $150.  Click here for the deal. 2. Open the box and lay out the pieces.  Might need to do some spot sanding. 3. Prime the chairs. 3. Decide on colors and pick up

Summer Weekend

Source I’m in the market for a firepit to add to our backyard hangout.  Any suggestions? Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I’m a sucker

For succulents!!! Today is my mother-in-law’s birthday (Happy B-day Tricia!) and so this post is dedicated to the woman with the greenest thumb I know.  She is literally a plant whisperer! So last weekend I picked up some soil and a few adorable succulents from Home Depot (between $2 – $4 each). And using some pots I had bought ages ago at TJMaxx, had this in under 30 minutes! Now I’m addicted, and thinking we need an entire succulent wall like one of these! Click images for source. I am just mesmerized by the incredible textures and lush look to

Outside Pride: Planters

Since most of you know by now that I am horrible with plants, you’re probably thinking “why the $*&% is she writing about them then!!??” Well my friends… deep down, like waaaay deep down in there, I think I have little green thumb that wants to sprout.  But until that happens, what‘s the harm in a little fantasizing, eh?? So on that note… How about some plants for your outdoor space? And let’s think outside the box here.  Rather than talk about the actual greens, let’s focus today on the oh so many fun ways of displaying them! Not following?
