One of my favorite parts about designing a room is figuring out the layout. I love the initial process of taking measurements and figuring out the best use of space for our furniture. Sidenote: I am NOT good at actually taking measurements… I’ve always been a “ball park” or “eye ball it” kinda gal, and that doesn’t usually fly when you’re dealing with layouts. Alright, let’s talk paint colors!!! This past weekend we (and by we I really mean T-man) began painting the soon-to-be baby room! Gotta love the doctor rec of avoiding being around toxic paints As I told you in a previous post, we decided to go with a navy blue for the walls, but of course there are about a million shades of navy blue to choose from. Originally I thought I had settled on the Benjamin Moore color Hale Navy. In fact, I was absolutely in love with it. After following my own There are many great things about being a home owner, as I often share here on this blog… But there are also times when I really miss being a renter, where many of the “no fun” tasks are miraculously taken care of for you! Case in point: The Blizzard of 2013 Like most of you New Englanders, we got slammed this weekend with a Nor’easter that dumped up to 30″ of snow!!! We were actually away in Maine for most of the storm and so coming home Sunday afternoon was quite a slap in the face. There was no place to even Winter has definitely meant a lull in our house renovation calendar… a welcome one at that. It’s given us time to relax, recoup, plan, and most importantly, save money for the next projects!!! And the next big project on our agenda is actually about half way done (oh I’m so sneaky) and so I thought I’d catch you up a bit before things move too far. Welcome to our backyard! For the town we live in, we were incredibly lucky to get a large plot of land – much of which is taken up by our backyard. In Happy one year anniversary to our house! I can’t believe it was one year ago today that we closed on our first home. One year (and a lot of sweat, sand paper, early morning trips to Home Depot, beers and frozen dinners, plenty of paint cans, and a ton of internet research and calls to our parents) later, I can honestly say we made one of best decisions of our lives. Yes, there’s always more work to be done, and blog posts to write, but we could not be happier in our home! Special shout out to Redfin‘s Ready for another room reveal? I hope so ’cause I’m about to show you one! Warning, this one isn’t super exciting but it comes with cute dog pics so totally worth it. I haven’t talked much about our office because it’s probably the one room in the house that we have done the least amount of work on, and still have plans to update. Shortly after we closed on the house we found out that our poor dog Roxy was going to need major surgery (not to worry – she is now fully recovered) and so the office quickly became It’s time to get up close and personal with our living room! Let’s back up a sec to make this as dramatic as possible, k? Remember the before shots??? First came the get down and dirty work, which I shared with you here. But then came the fun stuff… The decorating! I’ve tried to list where everything is from, and you’ll notice that not only am I a crazy Craigslist junkie (don’t judge) but that I don’t believe that decor needs to be expensive. There are incredible finds at Target, TJMaxx, Flea Markets, etc… And we’re DONE!!! The kitchen mini-reno is now complete! Let’s take a look, shall we? It all started with this pretty picture. This is a photo from when we first saw the house. Obviously the appliances were a huge selling point, so we put an offer in immediately! Kidding of course. But we saw potential! (See Lessons in Real Estate: Inner Beauty). Once we moved our furniture in and decorated a bit, the room began to show a little potential… but we weren’t quite there. First came the new fridge. For two months it was On Monday I told you all about our heat conversion project… Well moving from oil to gas has been quite a process in itself, but it also means some major changes to our kitchen, since gas heat = gas stove! And well you can’t have a new fridge and stove and not update the other appliances, right? It just wouldn’t be fair to them. Let’s start with a look back at the kitchen when we bought the house: Right away we updated the fridge (you can read about the steal we got here) since our Home Energy What do you do when you’re stuck with bathroom colors from the 1970s (helloooo yellow!) but can’t afford a major update? Get creative with decor, that’s what! My plans for our upstairs bathroom… I’m pretty excited about this… Excited about a bathroom? Yes sir. Do I need to get out more? Probably… {Anyone else have some creative and inexpensive ways to spruce up a dated room?}  |
