Quick hanging tip

I used to hate hanging things. I’ll admit it, I’m lazy and hate the process of measuring with a tape measure and ultimately messing up and leaving unwanted holes in the walls. But a few years ago I came across this amazing tip that I wish I could credit since it has done wonders for our walls! Since I can’t remember where I saw it, I’ll pay it forward here! 1. Flip your piece over to expose the hooks or holes. Yup, clearance from HomeGoods baby! 2. Cut a piece of painters tape and lay it across the top, covering

Uninvited House Guests

No, not crazy Aunt Jane or nosy neighbor Fred, I’m talking about ANTS! Every spring we get a visit from these annoying and creepy bugs, and now that we’re out in the ‘burbs, this year was the worst visit yet. They start one at a time, and then suddenly the whole family is in the kitchen and I want to barf. While Charlie, who LOVES bugs, could not be happier with the situation, I wasn’t having it so decided to take matters to Google. After some quick searching for solutions that required only things I had in the house (there

Less Energy, Mo Money

About three years ago I shared with you our experience of switching from oil to gas heat (read more here) and briefly mentioned the free Mass Save home energy audit we took advantage of, to help make it all happen. Well we just had an audit for our new house, and the free service is just too great not to share the info with you. So Massachusetts home owners, LISTEN UP! And if you don’t live in MA, I’m sure there are comparable programs in your home state as well. Let me know if you’re aware of

Let it Grow

Thank you everyone for your super sweet comments about our backyard renovation! It was our longest and most expensive project to date, and while totally worth it, your comments meant so much! And while we’re on the subject… I’m excited to share with you the latest and greatest addition to the yard. Our new plant and flower garden! But first and foremost… HUGE shout out and thank you goes to my mother-in-law who was hands down the MVP for this project. For those of you who may not know, my husband Tony grew up

Happenings…

And I’m back! I hope you all had a lovely Memorial Day weekend. I attended what was likely the most beautiful wedding EVER and still can’t get over the fact that my little brother is now married!!! The Wequasett Resort in Chatham, MA was the most stunning venue I have ever seen, so anyone interested in a classy cape wedding, I recommend checking it out! Love you Joe & Lindsay!!! Oh but it hasn’t been all wedding fun… We’ve been quite busy over at the Hopf house. There’s been some front yard

Ikea Hack: Besta Desk

This Ikea desk is so properly named the “Besta” because it is seriously the best. And it actually got even better this week, as I added some personal touches to the already sleek and functional design! But let’s back up for a sec…. So I have been in great need of a new desk, since my last one (scored by my dad free on the sidewalk – thanks dad!) was a little too small for me. It also didn’t have any storage space so I found that my computer was always competing with paperwork. And where was I supposed to

Holy Snow!

There are many great things about being a home owner, as I often share here on this blog… But there are also times when I really miss being a renter, where many of the “no fun” tasks are miraculously taken care of for you! Case in point: The Blizzard of 2013 Like most of you New Englanders, we got slammed this weekend with a Nor’easter that dumped up to 30″ of snow!!! We were actually away in Maine for most of the storm and so coming home Sunday afternoon was quite a slap in the face. There was no place

Scenes from my Stay-Cation

With the holidays falling mid week this season, I was fortunate enough to get a few days off from work. And since traveling wasn’t in the plans for this year, Tony and I made the most of our stay-cation by getting lot’s of things done around the house. Ok so it’s not Jamaica, but checking things off my house to do list and getting organized is music to my ears. Note: If anyone wants to send me to an all inclusive beach resort, I’m not going to protest. So one looming project took place in our garage. After the big

House Files: Office Makeover {and some dog}

Ready for another room reveal? I hope so ’cause I’m about to show you one! Warning, this one isn’t super exciting but it comes with cute dog pics so totally worth it. I haven’t talked much about our office because it’s probably the one room in the house that we have done the least amount of work on, and still have plans to update. Shortly after we closed on the house we found out that our poor dog Roxy was going to need major surgery (not to worry – she is now fully recovered) and so the office quickly became

Demo Day

The projects that seem to be the most fun at our house are the ones that involve demolition. So when we decided to remove the back wall of our garage, to say Tony was excited is an understatement. Alright here’s the deal. In the back of our garage is a concrete wall, and behind that concrete wall is a storage room. Not only could we use space for a workbench, but we also needed a place for Tony to store his motorcycle in the winter. Yes, we have a motorcycle… In fact at one point we had two motorcycles… Not
