To paint, or not to paint… That is the question!
From day one I’ve debated whether or not to paint our kitchen cabinets. There are a lot of them, and now that our new appliances are in, I can get a better sense of how things could look.
Things to note:
Floors are an off white linoleum
Walls are 2 shades of yellow
Back-splash and countertops are a white with a slight marble design.
None of these are “upgradable” right now!
Here’s what we’re working with now:

And here is what it would look like (soooorta) with white cabinets. It’s a little harsh looking, but keep in mind there would be texture from the cabinet doors, lines, fixtures, etc…
Or what about a lighter shade of gray to avoid too much contrast with the floors and backsplash? Might also bring out the slight gray marble in the counter-tops….
Or what if we went bolder with an muted green? Maybe with a distressed finish?
I’d love to hear what you think!
Keep it? Paint it? Start saving for a total upgrade???

I would absolutely paint them white and maybe paint the backsplash areas of the wall a dark contrasting color like gray or gray-blue?
So unfortunately our backsplash is actually the same material as our counter… apparently they just kept going with it! Not sure if I can paint it… but maybe we can tile over it! Love that color idea though.
I’d say go with a deep grey/blue color.
The white is definitely way too harsh a predictable. I have a bunch of cool pics if you want them
umm… YES PLEASE! I’d love to see some pictures!!! Thank you!
I think if you go white or too light of a grey then you will have no contrast. With the light walls and backsplash you need something to contrast or else the only thing that will contrast and stick out will be the appliances. Hope that makes sense.
Grey also looks yummy with yellow. I made a pinterest board with cabinet pics xoxo-anna
I would paint the cabinets white. I would THEN use a color or fun patterned tile for the backdrop.
Instead of painting, did you consider sanding and staining a warm cherry or darker maple tone? Your kitchen is so bright, a darker new stain and updated contemporary hardware would match your new SS appliances and go a long way!
Please don’t paint them green. LOL Our home was built in 1959 and has solid maple cabinets. We bought the house from my grandparents and they had painted/stained/shellac’d them to death…after three weeks of scraping and sanding, we had really pretty wood to work with. We are still trying to decide on a stain and finish but I just love the wood so much better than painted cabinets!
Haha – Thanks Jenn! I don’t think we’ll go with green, and totally feel your pain. I feel the same way about wallpaper now!!!
If there in great condition then keep them. If it was me I would probably start fresh but that’s just me : ) I can’t wait to see what you do!
How exciting to start a project like this! I would definitely paint these cabinets white, I think it would brighten up the space a lot. We have white cabinets in our kitchen and white subway tile on the wall so there isn’t a lot of contrast there. However, one thing I was thinking about is that you could perhaps paint the countertop and backsplash. This woman made a painted countertop and it looks great: http://dosfamily.com/2011/08/i-made-a-kitchen-top/ I’m not sure if it would work on laminate, but it’s worth looking into.
Also, if you’re painting the cabinets, please do a good prep job! We didn’t sand our cabinets down completely at first and the paint started peeling off and we had to start the whole process over again. So to save you lots of trouble, I highly recommend doing it right the first time
I’ll look forward to seeing what you’ll do! Good luck!
Thanks Linn!! By the way, I am OBSESSED with your stainless steal countertops… What a transformation!
